TWA retirees win ruling in lawsuit against American Posted on Wednesday 04 February @ 05:51:17 By Bloomberg, AP and Staff Reports1/29/2004
American Airlines must face claims of former Trans World Airlines workers that the carrier reneged on an agreement to give retirees free and cut-rate air fare after acquiring TWA, a judge has ruled. U.S. District Judge Joseph J. Farnan Jr. of Wilmington, Del., rebuffed American's bid to throw out suits by a former TWA pilot, flight attendants and other employees over the airline's refusal to honor a union contract providing free passes and reduced air fares to some retirees. AMR Corp., parent of American, created the world's biggest airline company in April 2001 with its $4.2 billion purchase of TWA in a bankruptcy courtauction. Officials of the Fort Worth-based American were not available for comment Wednesday on Farnan's ruling, which was issued Jan. 16. Retired TWA pilot Ricky Martin, flight attendants Patti Frazier and Barbara Levy and other former TWA workers sued American in federal courts in Texas, California and Arizona September 2001 over the agreement. The cases were transferred to Farnan in Delaware because that's where TWA's bankruptcy sale to American was approved
